About Gary Newmeyer

Gary started climbing in 2010 when he lived in Anacortes, WA while stationed there in the Navy.  After his enlistment in the Navy, Gary moved to Durango, CO for sunny weather and to pursue his new found love for rock climbing. This is also where he met another JHMG guide Nik Mirhashemi. Nik and Gary started climbing together exclusively. Gary became interested in guiding and became an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor in 2013 and thus kicked off his guiding career.

Gary started guiding in Durango, and continued to progress as a mountain guide with training thru the AMGA. He is now an AMGA certified Rock Guide with years of experience in Red Rock. He has traveled all around the west, and is in love with the sandstone climbing in  Red Rock. He has onsighted 5.12, established new routes, and shared his knowledge of climbing and the area for the last 3 years. Gary enjoys teaching all types of classes and guided objectives. He will be teaching an Intro to Outdoor course on October 23rd and 24th. He enjoys group trips for the wide range of personalities, camaraderie, and  an opportunity to pass on his deep knowledge of Red Rock Canyon.

Testimonials

  • Gary was so great! He was a wonderful teacher and super patient. We were also able to summit one of the Red Rocks together and it was his first time on top of it too. Also I was able to reach a goal of mine! I haven't climbed more than a 5.8 outdoors and I was able to get to 5.10B so I feel really awesome about it.

  • I have climbed with many many guides around the world and Matt, Gary and Jarad were excellent. They were great fun to be with, they were careful with safety without being over the top, the technical level of the climbing was just right to challenge us without being overly hard, and the whole party had an awesome first day. For most it was their first multi pitch climb and they were exhausted but very happy with their achievement. On the second day my wife and I climbed with Gary and [] on Great Red book and it was just awesome, Thank you for great guiding, great climbing, and two awesome days in the hills ! :-)

  • My husband and I enjoyed an amazing day in Red Rocks with Gary. It was truly perfect. Gary provided excellent and safe guidance for our multi pitch climb. He also had excellent knowledge of the best route to take and when to challenge us. He was fun to hang out with in addition to being our guide and photographer!
