Deepen your knowledge base and refine your backcountry skills through our American Avalanche Association Approved recreational level 1 avalanche course.   Our Rec 1 courses utilize a mix of self guided learning, classroom time and experiential education to create a comprehensive learning environment that adapts to your schedule and learning needs.  Our professional guides and avalanche instructors are dedicated to providing you with a unique and powerful course that will fundamentally change the way you view backcountry winter travel and how you make your choices when recreating in it.

Our hybrid TMG Level 1 Courses are designed for people looking to build a foundation for backcountry travel who need a more flexible timeline that can fit into evenings and weekends.  This comprehensive course consists of self guided learning,  evening classroom sessions  and 2 days in the field.  The curriculum focuses on understanding the avalanche triangle, hazard evaluation, decision-making and foundations in companion rescue.  Throughout the course you will learn the skills and tools needed to evaluate the risk and navigate decisions when traveling through avalanche terrain.

The course begins at 5:30PM for the 3 hour evening session and then meets at the base lodge at Whitefish Mountain Resort at 830 AM on both field days. Students can expect to be done with class by 630 PM on both days.

Itinerary

Our hybrid online/in-person TMG Level 1 Courses are designed for people looking to build a foundation for backcountry travel who need a more flexible timeline that can fit into an evening and weekend format.  This comprehensive course consists of 2-3 hours of self guided learning, a 7 hours of virtual evening classroom sessions (split between 2 different nights) and 2 weekend days in the field.

The curriculum focuses on information collection and comprehension, decision-making and companion rescue skills.  Throughout the course you will learn the skills and tools needed to navigate the winter mountains and evaluate the snowpack when traveling through avalanche terrain.  Our goal is to create more confidence and comfort within our students.

The course begins at 5:30 PM for the 3.5 hour evening sessions and then meets at the base lodge at Whitefish Mountain Resort at 830 AM on both field days. Students can expect to be done with class by 630 PM on the first day and byt 530 PM on the second.
