About The Mountain Guides — Professional Mountain Guides Since 1968
Who We Are
The Mountain Guides (formerly Jackson Hole Mountain Guides) is the second-oldest guide service in the United States, founded in 1968 in the shadow of the Grand Teton. For over five decades, we’ve been leading climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, avalanche education, and wilderness medicine programs across the American West. Today, our team of approximately 70 professional mountain guides operates in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho — from the granite spires of Grand Teton National Park to the desert towers of Moab and the sandstone walls of Red Rock Canyon.
Our Standards
The Mountain Guides is accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) at the organizational level — not just individual guides, but the business itself. We are an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service in Grand Teton National Park, permitted by the U.S. Forest Service in the Bridger-Teton, Custer-Gallatin, and Shoshone National Forests, and authorized by the Bureau of Land Management in Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. We also operate in Colorado’s Eldorado Canyon State Park and Boulder Open Space. Every guide on our team is a W-2 employee with full benefits — not a subcontractor. All certified guides hold at minimum a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. We take this standard seriously because our clients’ safety depends on it.
What We Offer
Our programs span the full spectrum of mountain adventure: guided rock climbing from beginner to expert, alpine mountaineering including the Grand Teton and Granite Peak, backcountry skiing and splitboarding in the Tetons, Wasatch, and RMNP, a full suite of AIARE avalanche courses, wilderness medicine certifications (WFR and WFA) in partnership with Wilderness Medical Associates, and the Women’s Network Climbing Series — eight women’s programs across six states. Whether you’re a first-time climber or an experienced mountaineer planning a major objective, our guides will meet you where you are.
The Experience
We keep group sizes small, provide all technical gear, and customize every program to your goals and experience level. From your first inquiry to the summit and back, our team works to make your mountain experience safe, educational, and unforgettable.
