Climbing For a Cause

October 10, 2017 | Posted in: JHMG

I remember when I was 10, my hockey team held a fundraiser to help raise money for the local homeless shelter.  We got pledges for each lap we skated, the goal was 100 laps.    I remember getting my pledge form and attacking the neighborhood.  I loved skating and would have skated 100 laps for fun, pledge or no pledge. But when the day came to actually skate the laps, there was something different.  I was doing what I loved to do, but I was doing good at the same time.  It felt better than just doing it for yourself.

Big City Mountaineers  provides transformative wilderness mentoring experiences for under- resourced youth in 7 cities across the US. These one-to-one mentored expeditions facilitate the discovery of teens’ capabilities and specific assets to help them lead in their communities.

Their fundraising arm is called Summit For Someone and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides has been very proud to support this organization over the years.  In a nutshell, Summit for Someone takes climbers and outdoor enthusiasts who are looking to climb a peak, and allows them to raise money for their ascent to help support Big City Mountaineer programs around the country.

This July, 11 charitable climbers came to Jackson Hole Mountain Guides to do just that, climb one of North America’s most iconic peaks and help raise money for Big City Mountaineers.  One of those climbers was Ben Schenk.  Ben is widely known in the outdoor industry as being the host of the popular podcast Mountain Meister.  As a member of the team, Ben not only successfully climbed the Grand Teton, but chronicled his team’ s experience.  I just listened to it.  It is VERY COOL.  To listen to it, please CLICK HERE.

If you are interested in hearing first hand about what a 4-Day Grand Teton climb  is like.  Then check out Mountain Meister.  And if you are considering climbing the Grand Teton, this year or in the future and want to climb with a cause, I urge you to check out the Summit for Someone Program at Big City Mountaineers.  BCM has already set their dates for 2018!  The BCM Grand Teton Climb will be July 6-9, 2018.

Not only do you get to climb one of the world’s most iconic peaks with a (renowned) professional guide service at no cost to yourself, but you are raising awareness of, and important funds for, Big City Mountaineers’ mentored youth expeditions. It’s a great way to do something you love in a way that helps others too. If you get a chance to speak to others who have climbed with SFS you’ll understand that it makes an already special experience even more meaningful.
