Meet JHMG’s Lead Guide Mark Postle

Columbus Ohio is NOT known for it’s rock climbing nor does it have a history of putting out great rock climbers. Evidently no one told Mark Postle. “I was introduced to climbing in the late 80’s when my father took me to the New River Gorge in West Virginia and the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. I was pretty much hooked.” Even though it was a 4 hour drive, Mark continued to climb and attended Ohio State University where he majored in Chemistry. ” After I graduated from college I was looking for a way to earn a living, travel, and spend a lot of time outdoors. I’m pretty good with people so guiding was a natural fit.”
Now in his 14th season at JHMG and his 4th year as JHMG’s Lead Guide Mark has become a important part of the JHMG Leadership Team. ” The Lead Guide roll is a difficult one. His job is to coordinate schedules, communicate conditions, help oversee new guide audits, ohh and pretty much everything else. Mark’s help in controlling the summer chaos is invaluable.” says JHMG’s General Manager Jason Dittmer.
When Mark is not busy with his JHMG administrative responsibilities, you can find him on Aconcagua or Denali or he is pursuing his personal climbing goals. “I enjoy so many aspects of guiding, but being able to take people into environments that are intimidating for them, teach them the skills to overcome their fears and help them push beyond what they thought was possible is always super rewarding for me.” As Mark’s client and friend, Mark Konchar put’s it. ” Mark is super capable in all aspects of alpine climbing and mountaineering. In particular, after 5 or 6 climbing days and long trips with Mark I have found that not only is he a great teacher and ultra safe guide, he is an equally gifted route finder on tricky terrain. Enjoyable with the entire family, or on solo trips, Mark is the total package.”
We agree, Mark is the total package, and we feel lucky to have him.
