The Mountain Guides in Montana’s Flathead Valley

Based in Whitefish, Montana — just 30 miles from the entrance to Glacier National Park — The Mountain Guides Montana offers year-round guided adventures in rock climbing, alpine mountaineering, AIARE avalanche education courses and wilderness medicine training in one of the most spectacular and uncrowded mountain environments in the American West. Whether you’re looking for a family rock climbing day on the quiet crags of northwest Montana, an AIARE avalanche course with field days near Whitefish Mountain Resort, or a multi-day expedition to summit Granite Peak (Montana’s highpoint), our AMGA-accredited guides bring the same professional standard that has defined The Mountain Guides since 1968.

Guided Rock Climbing in Whitefish

Northwest Montana’s climbing scene is one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Our private guided climbing trips take you to uncrowded crags in the Stillwater Canyon, Stone Hill or Kila crags — all within easy driving distance of Whitefish. Half-day and full-day options are available, with all climbing gear provided. Our rock climbing programs are designed for everyone from first-timers and families with kids as young as five to experienced climbers looking for local beta and a reliable partner. These trips are a perfect summer activity near Glacier National Park.

Granite Peak Expedition — Montana’s Highest Summit

Granite Peak (12,807’) is Montana’s highest summit and one of the most challenging state highpoints in the country. Located deep in the Beartooth Wilderness, our guided Granite Peak expeditions combine multi-day wilderness travel, glacier crossings, and technical rock climbing on the final summit push. This is a serious mountaineering objective that rewards strong hikers and climbers with one of the most remote and rewarding summits in the Northern Rockies.

Avalanche Education & Wilderness Medicine

Our Montana winter programs include AIARE Recreational Level 1 and 2 and Companion Rescue avalanche courses, with field days near Whitefish Mountain Resort in the Canyon Creek backcountry. We offer both traditional classroom and hybrid online/field formats, plus a unique season long level 2 course. Women’s-specific avalanche courses are available, taught by experienced female instructors.

Year-round, we offer Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses and recertifications in Whitefish — essential credentials for backcountry professionals, outdoor educators, and serious recreationists.
