Backcountry skiing in Utah's Wastach Mountains

Wasatch

The Greatest Snow on Earth

Utah’s Wasatch Range is one of the premier backcountry skiing destinations in North America. The combination of consistent, cold, dry powder (the famous “Greatest Snow on Earth”), thousands of acres of accessible backcountry terrain, and proximity to Salt Lake City’s international airport makes the Wasatch uniquely attractive for backcountry skiers and splitboarders. The Mountain Guides offer professional avalanche education and advanced ski mountaineering programs in the Wasatch for skiers looking to build their backcountry skills or push into bigger objectives.

Our Wasatch Programs

AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course: Earn your AIARE certification with field days in real Wasatch avalanche terrain. Hybrid format — online learning plus focused field time. A long-weekend trip from SLC.

Avalanche Companion Rescue: Focused course on beacon search, probe technique, shoveling strategy, and companion rescue protocols. Essential for anyone traveling in avalanche terrain.

Wasatch Ski & Splitboard Mountaineering Camp: Advanced multi-day camp covering rope systems, steep skiing, and alpine travel for experienced backcountry skiers ready to push into bigger terrain.

Season & Getting Here

Wasatch backcountry season runs December through May. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is a major hub with direct flights from most US cities. Backcountry access points are 30–45 minutes from the airport — you can fly in and be skinning the same day.
