Women's Climbing Weekend at City of Rocks, Idaho
The City of Rocks, one of Idaho’s most incredible climbing areas, is the birthplace of The Women’s Network. It was launched in 1995 by Senior Guide Aimee Barnes. Aimee saw a need to create an event for women/ non-binary people who wanted to climb and connect with women/ non-binary climbers and guides. The City of Rocks was the ideal venue. Now incorporated into the Women’s Network, this series of programs are geared to all ability levels with a 4 to 1 guide to guest ratio. The groups will be small so your skill level can progress whether you are new to climbing or an experienced climber who is advancing their skills.
Women's Weekend at a Glance
- Location: City of Rocks National Reserve, Almo, Idaho; camping at the reserve
- Length: Two and a half days, Friday afternoon through Sunday
- Prerequisites: None for the intro weekend; the advanced weekend is for climbers pushing their grade
- Format: Small groups at a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio, ground school then two full days on the crags
- Season: Spring
- For: Women and non-binary climbers of all levels
What You'll Learn
- Intro weekend: belaying a top-roped and lead climber, knots, protection, anchors and movement on rock, with lots of climbing time
- Advanced weekend: sport and trad protection, anchors, and climbing at a harder grade to raise your personal level
Trip Format
Arrive at the City of Rocks campsites Friday afternoon for ground school and climbing at camp, then dinner. Saturday and Sunday start with coffee at 6 AM, depart for the crags at 9, climb until 5, with a group dinner in Almo and an optional hot springs soak. Who This Trip Is For & Fitness
The intro weekend suits new climbers and those building fundamentals; expect 15 to 30 minute approaches over easy to moderate terrain. The advanced weekend is physical, with roughly hour-long approaches on uneven ground, and is for climbers ready to work on harder routes. The events are priced as a group with a four-person minimum; private and custom trips are available.

Basic weekend Skills Covered: Belaying a top-roped climber and lead climber. Knots, protection, anchors, movement on the rock, and lots and lots of climbing time.
Day 1: Meet @ City of Rocks RV Park
- Start arriving @ 2 :00 pm
- 4:00 Ground school- trip goals Climbing @ camp.
- 6:30 Coil up the ropes.
- 7:45 Dinner (Tracy’s)
Day 2 & 3 Schedule
- 6:00 am Coffee and hot water served.
- 8:00 am Personal Breakfast
- 9:00 Depart from Camp to the base of the Crag to begin the day of climbing.
- 12:00 Lunch
- 5:00 Coil up the Ropes
- 6:30 Saturday night dinner in Almo at the Rock City

Price: $525 per person
Course price includes: Professional Guide, Campsite fee, Group kitchen, Morning hot water and Coffee, Sun showers, camping equipment such as sleeping bag, tents and pad are available to rent.

Transportation
Basic – Participants should expect approaches of 15-30 minute hike over easy to moderate hiking terrain.
Advanced – This trip is physical and requires fitness and stamina to access the climbs and climb them. The approach to most climbs is approximately an hour on uneven terrain.

- Salt Lake City International Airport – 4 hrs driving distance to the COR
- Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Reno, NV – 8 hrs driving distance
- Jackson Hole Airport in Jackson, WY – 4 hrs driving distance
- Idaho Falls Regional Airport – 2 hrs driving distance
Directions:
The City of Rocks is located in south-central Idaho, south of Interstate I-86, West of Interstate I-86, and North of Interstate I-80. Below is a link with driving directions:

The Visitor Center is located in Almo, ID, and the rock formations are only minutes outside the town.
How to get to the Almo, ID:
Driving from Boise: take I-84 East to exit 216 (Declo); go south on Highway 77 to
Conner Creek Junction (stop sign); then turn right (west) on Highway 77 Spur to Almo.
The visitor center and the park entrance are south of the post office and businesses.
Driving from Pocatello: take I-86 West to I-84 West to exit 216 and proceed as above.
Driving from Salt Lake City: take I-84 west to exit 245 (Sublette) , turn left and go west to Malta. From Malta take Highway 77 to Conner Creek Junction, continuing straight west through the junction the Highway becomes 77 Spur. Take Highway 77 Spur to Almo. The visitor center and the park entrance are south of the post office and businesses.
Car Rental / Carpooling:
A variety of car rental companies are available at all the airports – reserve online for the best price and selection. An email list of participants will be sent out ahead of time to help you coordinate travel schedules and carpooling options.

Where we stay – Camping:
Please note that the City of Rocks clinic is held in a remote location. Our campsites are #36,37 &38. All the campsites in the City of Rocks are dispersed throughout the park. Follow the brown park signs from Almo into the park by taking road 3075S South just past the Rock City Diner. This road turns to dirt right away. Follow the main road as shown on the attached map past a couple turns. If you pass the parking lot at Bath Rock, about 6-7 miles from the turn-off in Almo then you pass our sites on the right

Groceries / Restaurants
Almo, ID is a very small town with 2 small stores, one of which sells gas, and one restaurants. It’s best to do your grocery shopping and get your supplies before you arrive (for example in Idaho Falls, or Salt Lake City). There are no climbing gear stores, although you can find a few camping supplies.
