City of Rocks Climbing Gear List

City of Rocks Climbing Gear List

This climbing gear list covers what to bring for guided rock climbing trips at City of Rocks National Reserve in southern Idaho — one of the American West's most distinctive climbing destinations, with golden granite spires, world-class single- and multi-pitch routes, and a uniquely high-desert character. At 7,000 feet, City of Rocks delivers cool granite, exceptional rock quality, and notoriously variable mountain weather — locals joke that you can experience all four seasons in a single day.

Our AMGA-certified guides supply all technical climbing equipment, so this list focuses on the personal layering, footwear, and camping essentials you're responsible for bringing.

City of Rocks Climbing Season

Climbing season at City of Rocks runs roughly May through October, with the prime windows being late May through June and September through early October. Mid-summer (July–August) brings hot afternoons, but mornings and evenings remain comfortable. Late season (October) can deliver perfect crisp climbing conditions but increases the risk of early storms and overnight freezes — pack accordingly.

What to Expect on a City of Rocks Climbing Day

A typical guided day at City of Rocks involves:

Short approaches to most climbing areas — the reserve's road network puts many classic routes within 5-15 minutes of the parking pullouts

Wide daily temperature swings — at 7,000 feet, mornings and evenings run cool even in mid-summer; midday in the sun can be hot

Variable weather — afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly in summer; your guide will track conditions and adjust objectives if needed

Climbing-style variety — guided programs range from beginner sport routes to multi-pitch trad lines on classic spires

Camping at the reserve — most multi-day trips involve camping at City of Rocks campgrounds; see camping essentials below
