Overview
This private 3 or 4 day guided climbing and camping tour is perfect for families and friend groups. City of Rocks National Reserve is known for its outstanding granite rock climbing, short approaches, and fantastic campsites. The region features endless routes perfect for beginner to experienced climbers. The surrounding hiking trails, hot springs, and amazing wilderness provide plenty of activities for everyone in the group.
The tour includes 3 or 4 days of guided rock climbing with an AMGA Certified Rock Guide, 2 or 3 nights camping, all necessary camping and climbing equipment, and a camp chef preparing 3 meals a day.

Trip Planner
Itinerary
Day 1:
You will meet your guides at the City of Rocks Visitor Center in Alamo, Idaho at 9:00 AM. After introductions, we will drive 15 minutes to the climbing area. We have several beginner and advanced cliffs to choose from. With most approaches under a 5 minute hike from the car, we can visit multiple locations in one day. After a full day climbing we will check into our campsite and settle in for the night. Enjoy the evening hanging around the campfire, or exploring the unique rock features surrounding camp. We’ll close the evening with a fantastic dinner prepared by one of the best outdoor chefs in the West!
- Guests are responsible for transportation to and from Alamo, ID.
- Starting time is adjustable to groups needs.
- Trip menu can be tailored to meet dietary restrictions and food preferences.
- Meals provided include lunch on Day 1 through lunch on final day.
Day 2:
Wake up at your leisure, or early to catch an amazing sunrise. After your guides prepare breakfast, we will start our second day of climbing. Today’s climbing area will depend on the group’s ability and preferences. Additionally, City of Rocks and the nearby Castle Rocks State Park hosts numerous hiking trails and amazing summits. As a private tour with two guides, the group members can individually choose to hike, climb, or remain in camp for the day. After a full day of adventuring we can stop by the hot springs and enjoy the final evening at camp.
Day 3:
City of Rocks is such a special place, we want to make the most of your final day. We can head to a new climbing area, or return to a project. After lunch together, we will decide on our final activity. The tour will conclude at the Visitor Center, where we will say goodbye.

As a private tour with two guides, the group members can individually choose to hike, climb, or remain in camp for the day.
Day 3:
Today we will climb at the nearby Castle Rock State Park, which features numerous sport routes on quality stone. This aptly named dome feature provides shade throughout the day, and hosts several multi-pitch rock climbs. After a full day of adventuring we can stop by the hot springs and enjoy the final evening at camp.
Day 4:
City of Rocks is such a special place, we want to make the most of your final day. We can head to a new climbing area, or return to a project. After lunch together, we will decide on our final activity. The tour will conclude at the Visitor Center, where we will say goodbye.

The City of Rocks is located in South Central Idaho near Almo, and while the roads are dirt, they can be negotiated by low clearance vehicles. It is about 5 hours from Jackson to the City, and about 3 hours from Salt Lake. In Almo, there are a few accommodations options, as well as car camping.

Information About the Guides?
Your guides for the City of Rocks Climbing Camp are Samantha Cooke and James Wieman.
Samantha and James have been professionally guiding multi-day tours together for 10 years. The couple met during college while obtaining degrees in outdoor recreation. Their shared passion for guiding developed into the cornerstone of their relationship. They now live in Southern Utah with their dog Roo.
James is an AMGA Certified Rock Guide with 16 years climbing experience. He primarily guides in Red Rocks Nevada, where he enjoys leading guests on the long adventurous climbs. He has completed big wall first ascents in Southwest Utah, and climbs outside roughly 200 days a year. His passion for rock guiding is obvious when climbing with him, as he always creates quality experiences tailored to his guests goals
Growing up, Samantha could be found either helping her Mom in the kitchen or playing outside. Cooking delicious and comforting meals for people outdoors became her life passion. Samantha enjoys creating recipes and tailoring menus to guest’s taste buds and dietary needs. With over 1,000 nights guiding in the backcountry, Samantha always facilitates a meaningful outdoor experience. Her backcountry cooking, combined with her expert interpretive knowledge, will leave you with the feeling of wonder.
City of Rocks is James and Samantha’s favorite summer destination. Due to the consistent good weather, fantastic moderate rock climbing, and superb camping in a remote wilderness setting. Together, the couple make the dream guide team, as they always provide an unforgettable experience for their guests.
