Teton Backcountry Skiing and Riding

Duration 1 Day

Overview

The Tetons have become world renowned for excellent backcountry skiing and riding and consistent snowfall.  We at Jackson Hole Mountain Guides live for the deep and light snow that blankets the Tetons every winter and its this love that keeps us busy and out in the mountains everyday.  You can be rest assured that any one of our AMGA-trained or certified guides that you go out with will have intimate knowledge of the Teton range, the snow pack and the daily weather patterns to help choose the perfect tour for that day.  Our guides work in these mountains year-round and know where to find the good snow in the nooks and crannies of the Teton Range.  It takes years and years to become familiar with the range and knowing multiple options and tours for all conditions and weather and this is something that we truly pride our self on.  We offer custom trips for novice to expert skiers and riders and will help you select objectives in line with your ability and enthusiasm.  Join one of our experienced guides for a day of untracked powder, solitude and exercise.  Our backcountry tours span from gladed tree skiing during low visibility days to scenic summits and high mountain traverses and everything in between.  Get a group together or join us for a private day out for some of the most beautiful backcountry touring terrain in the states!

All our tours are private. For group backcountry ski and snowboard trips check out our Backcountry Camps, or for competent resort skiers and riders looking to learn more about backcountry travel techniques, check out our Intro to Backcountry Class.

Arguably the best value in the valley! This adventure requires no $100 lift ticket and pairs you with one of the most experienced backcountry guides in the industry. An unparalleled experience for intermediate to advanced backcountry skiers and riders.  The day starts early at the JHMG office and from there the guests will go through a quick gear check as well as a quick avalanche beacon refresher.  From there the group will head out to Grand Teton National Park or Teton Pass, where we will quickly get into touring mode and start stretching the legs for the uphill ascent.  With sustained efforts up Olive Oil, Wimpy’s Knob, 25 Short, Maverick or Shadow Peak, this earns you thousands of feet of pristine snow in the heart of the Tetons as you drop back to the valley floor. Expect to get in 2500-6000 vertical feet.  You can also expect these days to run about 6-8 hours in total beginning early at the JHMG office.  Because of scheduling, these trips cannot be booked directly online. Grand Teton National Park is located roughly 30 minutes from our Jackson, WY headquarters. Our Jackson office is located in the south part of Jackson at 1325 S. Highway 89, Suite 104 and shares a parking area with Smith’s. Our phone number is (800) 239-7642 or (307) 733-4979. Most trips and classes will meet at this office for gear checks, preparation, and classes. The Jackson Hole airport is the closest, but Idaho Falls (a 2 – 2.5 hour drive) is a cheaper option and Salt Lake City (4 – 5 hour drive) are also air travel options. It is helpful to arrive a couple of days prior to your trip/class in order to acclimatize. Otherwise, you should arrive the day before and stop by our office for an equipment check. Do not plan on traveling the day after a significant climb – you will be tired and there are no guaranteed times when we will return to the trailhead. Plan on having accommodations for the night prior to and the night you return from a significant climb. There are a plethora of hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts in Jackson and the surrounding area. Accommodations near our office make your transitions convenient. It is highly advisable to make reservations as early as possible. Lodging recommendations and many more details can be found in the downloadable document below.

Testimonials

  • Amazing Back Country Ski day with JHMG. Our Guide knew exactly where to find the best pow! I wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

    — Rob Barton
  • Top notch guide service with enormous experience. I love the educational aspect as well. I always learn a ton.

    — Dirk Friel
  • Words cannot convey the experience of a winter day out with a JHMG guide taking you on a safe tour of the Tetons. Slow and steady up for a few hours rewards you with an exquisite view of the Tetons in all their majesty. Then, instead of an exhausting, bone-jarring hike back down, take the skins off your skis and ride down in powder that is almost impossible to find in a ski resort. Even a week after the last snowfall, you will still find good snow to ride down on. Even if it’s not a clear and sunny day, it’s a wonderful day out and you’ll want to keep going back until you are rewarded with those magnificent views. If the price for a ride on the Virgin Galactic rocket is $200,000, I’d say a day in the Tetons with a JHMG guide is the most undervalued ticket you can buy!

  • This is our third trip here to backcountry ski.  We love our guide and always request him.  The experience each year is always different and amazing.  This is the perfect escape for a few executives and we are already planning next year’s trip.

    — Paul Ellingson
  • These guys really know the mountain. We found powder to make fresh tracks while the whole of Jackson Hole had been skied out! Thank you Brian!

    — Mark Disney
  • Eddie is awesome – there is no one that I would feel more comfortable or safer skiing with! Excellent all the way around! JHMG is excellent.

    — Brett Stevens
  • I just wanted to let you know what an inspired and safe experience your guide, Patrick McDermott, provided for our group. In our group, we had 2 skiers who had never been out skiing in the backcountry. One of them hadn’t even skied in over 6 years. Patrick knew exactly how to handle the more challenging moments of the climb up and provided encouragement for all of us. His demeanor couldn’t have been better and his instincts and knowledge of the park were impeccable. The beauty and serenity of climbing and skiing in Teton National Park is truly a one of a kind experience and left all of us wanting more. I cannot recommend Jackson Hole Mountain Guides more and encourage everyone to take advantage of this exceptional experience. It was a gift for us all and did wonders for the soul.

  • The JHMG team provided a top-shelf experience for our custom backcountry ski adventure. The guides reached out to provide a helpful introduction and trip planning assistance. Our guide Pat quickly discerned the different skill and strength levels of our group members, and then tailored our adventure to accommodate each team member. Pat remained level headed and patient in the face of challenges and helped instill confidence in our team. We had a fantastic experience with Pat and JHMG, and hope to join for another adventure.
